Research AssignmentIn groups of 5 students will be assigned a water related disaster which have occurred in various parts of the world. Each group will research one of the following-
· 2010 BP Oil Spill · 1956 Minamata Bay poisoning · 2010-2011 Philippine flood · 2000’s Australia Drought · Ongoing-the Shrinking of the Aral Sea Part A Groups are required to deliver an authentic “News report” style oral presentation to the rest of the class. Each student is required to contribute to the presentation by both researching and performing. The “on-screen” role of each person is up to the group to decide. A good idea to fill out the five roles would be to have two news anchors give an overview of the disaster and bring in an “expert geologist” to analyse the causes. They could then cut across “live” to the scene of the disaster where a reporter is describing their surroundings and interviewing someone who has been directly impacted by the disaster (or even contributed to it?). Despite the serious subject matter – this is a good opportunity to have fun and let your dramatic side take the spot light! The effort and believability of the performance will be marked so make sure you convince us this is a real live news broadcast!!! Things that must be included *A brief power-point presentation with a couple photos (or a short video) on it to assist in showing your audience the impact that the disaster had on its society- Real news presenters do this technique! * An original graph- this can be on any relevant component relating to the disaster- can either be made digitally and included in the power point or be hand-drawn and presented as a poster You must mention *When and where the disaster occurred *Whether the disaster was man-made or natural and how it was believed to have been caused *The impact that the disaster has on the environment and human health with an emphasis on water quality * What has been done in response As long as those things are covered you may talk about anything else you found interesting- biodiversity, tourism impact, rescue stories, relief effort, etc. Presentations are expected to be at least 4 minutes long and go for no longer than ten minutes Part B This part is to be submitted individually in the form of either a written report or a poster. Briefly explain what your disaster is and what impact it has had on the water supply of the affected country/countries. Discuss whether this disaster could have been prevented or whether the response was/has been sufficient. Evaluate the effectiveness of the response/ prevention and come up with one original idea that would be an appropriate response/prevention This part should be no more than 400 words Finally include a hand drawn map detailing the areas that were impacted by the disaster. Remember to use BOLTSS!
